The World Health Organisation defines mental health as “A state of wellbeing in which every individual realises his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to his/her community”.
Work plays a strong role in our mental health and wellbeing and work is generally considered to be central to many people’s happiness. However it can also make us unwell and mental ill health is usually caused by a combination of work and non work related factors. It is estimated that one in four people experience a mental health issue in any given year and that one in six employees is depressed, anxious or suffering from stress-related issues at any one time.
Work can trigger or exacerbate such issues however enlightened organisational practices and well-trained line managers play a powerful role in fostering wellbeing and sustaining good mental health. Mental Health First Aid training can help assist in creating healthier workplaces – by removing the stigma and discrimination traditionally associated with mental ill health and encouraging people to talk about any issues will help prevent the problem escalating into a full-blown illness.
For any organisation, providing Mental Health First Aid training is part of being a responsible employer in addition to which it builds employee engagement, loyalty and productivity. There are also significant financial benefits – the cost of mental ill health to UK businesses is significant and evidence suggests that around 70 million working days are lost every year due to mental health. The cost of “presenteeism” (people who come to work but are unproductive because they are unwell) could be higher still.
The training can be tailored to your company’s specific requirements and delivered within the workplace for between 8 and 16 participants. Alternatively, we run workshops across the UK which can be booked on an individual or small group basis.
In addition to being MHFA instructors, we are Occupational Therapists with extensive experience working with people with mental health issues which further enhances course delivery. Training is delivered in four manageable chunks across two days focussing on what is Mental Health First Aid and how to apply Mental Health First Aid skills in a variety of areas such as depression, anxiety, personality disorders, eating disorders, self-harm, psychosis, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder.
Our training programme is very versatile and can suit a number of working sectors as well as individual needs including:-
- Social Care
- Ambulance Staff
- Staff Nurses
- Foster Parents
- School Teachers
- HR Managers
- Company Managers

- Individuals who have themselves experienced mental health issues
